A survey of 500+ marketing leaders finds the race to be found by AI is eroding the quality that sets brands apart – just as personal agents become a new gateway to every customer.
PALO ALTO, CA / ACCESS Newswire / October 14, 2026 / For years, brands optimized to be found by people. Now there’s a second audience: AI agents that increasingly discover, evaluate and act on a person’s behalf. As personal agents become a new gateway to customers, brands face a critical question: what will those agents find, trust and represent about them? New research from The Typeface Signal Report: The AI Visibility Gap, based on a survey of 500+ U.S. and U.K. marketing leaders, finds that 62% say brands are sacrificing content quality for AI citations, while 61% say the same about brand authenticity.
The paradox is that marketers feel ready. While 97% expect AI to become a top-three way people discover their brand by 2030, and 90% say they’re prepared to shape how AI describes them, many are following the same playbook to get cited. For enterprises, the stakes extend beyond visibility: as AI agents increasingly influence what customers discover, consider and choose, brands risk losing their differentiation at the very moment buying decisions are taking shape.
“AI is becoming a new interface between customers and brands. As personal agents begin discovering, evaluating and acting on people’s behalf, every enterprise has to ask what those agents will understand about its brand, and whether that experience is grounded in the same context, standards and values it gives its people,” said Abhay Parasnis, Founder and CEO of Typeface. “The answer isn’t to optimize harder for machines. It’s to give every person and agent a shared brand foundation, so greater AI visibility doesn’t come at the cost of what makes the brand distinctive.”
Key findings from the research include:
- The authenticity tax: 62% say brands are sacrificing content quality for AI citations, and 61% say the same about brand authenticity.
- The machine-facing web is already here: 68% are creating content experiences for AI that humans will likely never see.
- Confident, but not ready: 90% of leaders say their teams are prepared to shape how AI describes their brand, and 97% expect AI to be a top-three discovery channel by 2030, yet only 39% have a fully connected content lifecycle to deliver on it.
- No shared playbook: Only 30% say their functional teams collaborate closely on AI visibility with shared tools and metrics – 40% mostly work on their own or in silos, and 30% rely on a single team to set strategy for everyone else.
- Betting against search: 64% say AI chatbots will drive more brand discovery than traditional search within three years, and 49% plan to deprioritize or stop investing in SEO.
The Orchestration Gap
Being discovered by AI is only the first challenge. Enterprises also need to ensure that what AI systems find and represent is accurate, distinctive and consistent with their brand across every channel and customer interaction. Yet most marketing organizations lack the connected foundation to deliver on that promise. Today, 40% say their teams operate largely in silos, while 30% rely on a single team to set strategy for everyone else. And while 93% say a connected content lifecycle matters, only 39% have one.
Bolting AI onto disconnected teams doesn’t close the gap; it scales the silos faster. As brands chase citations with the same tactics, they risk becoming indistinguishable at the very moment AI is reshaping how customers discover and choose. Closing that gap requires connecting brand intelligence, AI agents and enterprise systems, so every team can work from the same foundation, without sacrificing the distinctiveness that makes a brand worth finding.
The Path Forward
That need becomes more urgent as personal agents emerge as a new interface between consumers and enterprises. The fix is a shared foundation: the brand’s values, approved messages, and source of truth, that every team and every AI agent works from. That foundation is what lets brands scale their visibility as one voice instead of a scramble, and it’s what makes the next era possible: adaptable experiences that assemble in the moment for whoever’s on the other side, a person or an agent, always grounded in brand-approved, human-reviewed content. In an AI-driven world, being found is only the beginning. The advantage will belong to brands that remain unmistakably themselves, whether they’re engaging a person or an AI agent.
As personal agents become a new interface between consumers and enterprises, brands need more than visibility. They need a shared foundation of brand intelligence: values, approved messages, content and enterprise context, that guides how people and AI agents create, communicate and engage.
With that foundation connected across marketing workflows and enterprise systems, brands can move beyond optimizing individual pieces of content toward orchestrating consistent, governed experiences at scale. It also opens the door to more adaptable digital experiences that can take shape in the moment for whoever is engaging, a person or an AI agent, grounded in brand-approved, human-reviewed content.
