Titled for the expansive cultural corridor between Tenochtitlan and Etzanoa, Morris spent years studying and imagining sound traveling alongside trade, ceremony, and shared knowledge in the pre-Columbian Americas. Drawing inspiration from Indigenous musical traditions as well as the primal ambient soundworlds of Jorge Reyes, Steve Roach, Carlos Nakai, and Tribu, Tenochtitlan to Etzanoa is a contemporary homage to ancestral rhythm and ceremonial listening. The album is shaped by percussion, breath-driven flutes, wood drums, vocal invocations, and spacious drones.

Morris shares, “Tenochtitlan to Etzanoa is a sonic journey through the pre-Columbian era of the Americas, just before European arrival. From the Aztec island city of Tenochtitlan to the Wichita woodland settlement of Etzanoa, there was a massive trade route that existed throughout North and Central America during this time…Through this trade system, many customs and traditions were shared and incorporated into various tribes including religious ideas, practical tools, raw materials, as well as rhythms and music for the sacred and profane. Tenochtitlan to Etzanoa continues in the tradition of the soundworlds first created by Jorge Reyes and Steve Roach in the 1990’s merging tribal ambient sounds with shamanic themes. The album highlights eight tracks of ritual poly-rhythmic drumming, flutes, and deep chanting with a modern ambient underside that radiates an entheogenic glow of an ancient time that still influences our lives to this day.”

The music evokes imagery of another time and place, providing an ideal soundtrack for trance journeys. Rather than relying on drum machines or sequencing, Morris performed the album’s rhythmic foundation by hand, allowing each piece to breathe through repetition, variation, and the natural friction of acoustic instruments. Flutes and winds weave melodic paths through the percussion, while layered chants and treated vocals lend the music a ritual, human presence. Synthesizers are used not as a replacement for the acoustic ensemble, but as a surrounding field of shadow, air, and entheogenic color.

Morris is based in Arkansas, and the music echoes across his region of the U.S. Founded in 1325 A.D. on an island in Lake Texcoco (near what is now Mexico City), Tenochtitlan was a marvel of high-density urban engineering. The Aztecs expanded the city using chinampas (artificial floating agricultural beds), connected it to the mainland via massive causeways, and supplied fresh water through an advanced dual-pipe terracotta aqueduct system. At its peak, it was larger than almost any European city of its era. Etzanoa, in The Great Plains of the United States, is often referred to as America’s “Lost City,” an historic ancestral Wichita mega-site of 20,000+ people flourishing near the confluence of the Walnut and Arkansas Rivers between 1450 and 1700.
