Metal spinning, also known as spin forming, is a metalworking technique with roots dating back thousands of years that has evolved into a high-speed manufacturing process capable of producing complex, axially symmetric shapes. The method forms cones, tubes, hemispheres, parabolas, and cylinders from a single piece of material, and aluminum remains one of the most common selections for the process.
Among the reasons aluminum is frequently chosen is cost. Compared with metalworking processes such as metal stamping, tooling for aluminum spinning is often less expensive, sometimes only a fraction of the cost. That efficiency, combined with the relative ease of making design changes, makes spun aluminum a practical choice for prototyping, new product development, and low-to-medium volume production runs where minimizing upfront investment is important.
Beyond cost, the process itself changes the material’s properties. Metal spinning is a cold-working technique that realigns the grain structure of the aluminum, producing a work-hardening effect that increases tensile strength. As a result, a finished spun part can be stronger and more durable than a comparable component made through casting or deep drawing.
Because spun parts are formed from a single piece of aluminum, they are seamless and contain no welds. This monolithic construction can withstand higher pressures and is well suited to applications such as tank heads and pressure vessels. Aluminum also forms a natural protective oxide layer, giving it inherent corrosion resistance without secondary treatments such as painting, which is an advantage for parts used in outdoor, marine, or humid environments.
The material’s high ductility allows it to be formed into deeper and more intricate shapes than harder metals like steel, giving designers greater freedom to create complex contours and geometries. As a lightweight alternative to steel, aluminum also reduces shipping costs and is well suited to applications where weight is a critical factor, including the aerospace and automotive industries.

Two alloys are among the most preferred for the process. Aluminum 1100-O, a commercially pure grade made of 99 percent aluminum, is a soft alloy with lower strength but excellent formability, making it well suited for intricate shapes and deep-drawn parts. Aluminum 3003, a non-heat-treatable alloy that includes manganese, iron, and copper, is roughly 20 percent stronger than 1100 and is valued for its moderate strength, workability, and corrosion resistance. The company can spin aluminum in thicknesses ranging from 0.040 to 0.135 inch.
