After more than a decade of bringing European yacht brands to the American market, Performance Yacht Sales sees U.S. buyers becoming increasingly receptive to new approaches to space, efficiency, performance, and life aboard.
COCONUT GROVE, FL / ACCESS Newswire / October 7, 2026 / Over the past decade, the selection of yachts available to American buyers has expanded well beyond traditional categories. Sailing catamarans have become increasingly familiar in U.S. marinas, power multihulls are attracting owners with long-range cruising ambitions, and European builders are introducing design philosophies that emphasize efficient use of space, performance, and new approaches to life aboard.
Performance Yacht Sales (PYS) has had a front-row seat to that evolution.
Since 2013, the Coconut Grove-based company has worked with European yacht builders entering and developing their presence in the United States. That experience has given its team an opportunity to see not only which yachts attract attention, but which ideas resonate with American owners.
“Years ago, there were concepts we spent a lot more time explaining,” said Alex Sastre, founder and CEO of Performance Yacht Sales. “Today, buyers come to us already asking about catamarans, trimarans, efficient cruising, different layouts, and boats designed around spending more time aboard. The American buyer has become much more familiar with what European builders are doing.”
Making More of the Space Aboard
One of the most noticeable differences between yachts is not necessarily how much space they have, but how that space is used.
For buyers planning extended cruises, weekends with family, or significant time living aboard, the relationship between interior and exterior spaces can matter as much as the yacht’s overall dimensions. Sightlines, storage, movement between areas, access to the water, and the connection between the cockpit and interior living spaces can all influence how a yacht feels in everyday use.
Many European builders have placed considerable attention on these details, particularly as owners increasingly expect yachts to function as both capable cruising platforms and comfortable living spaces.
That can change the buying conversation.
“A yacht can look impressive on paper, but the real question is how it works when you are actually living on it,” Sastre said. “Where does everyone spend their time? How easily can you move around? Where do you put everything for a long trip? Those practical questions become very important once you start thinking beyond the initial purchase.”
Efficiency Does Not Simply Mean Speed
Performance is another area where PYS has seen buyer expectations evolve.
European sailing traditions have produced builders with a strong focus on hull design, weight, handling, and efficiency through the water. But for cruising owners, performance is not necessarily a question of achieving the highest possible speed.
Instead, it can mean finding the right balance between sailing ability, comfort, efficiency, ease of operation, and the type of cruising an owner intends to do.
An owner planning weekends close to home may have different priorities from a couple preparing for extended coastal cruising. A family interested in the Great Loop may approach the decision differently from someone planning to sail through the Bahamas or spend months living aboard.
PYS encourages buyers to define those plans before becoming attached to a particular yacht.
“We usually start with how someone wants to use the boat,” Sastre said. “Where are you going? How long will you be aboard? Who is coming with you? Are you operating the yacht yourself? Once you understand that, you can have a much more useful conversation about design and performance.”
More Buyers Are Looking Beyond Traditional Formats
The growing visibility of multihulls has also expanded what American buyers consider when shopping for a yacht.
Catamarans are now a familiar part of the sailing market, while power catamarans and trimarans provide additional alternatives for owners willing to look beyond conventional configurations.
Those platforms are not interchangeable, nor is any one design inherently right for every owner. Their growing presence, however, means buyers have a wider range of approaches to consider when thinking about space, cruising, efficiency, and onboard living.
PYS believes that increased exposure has made American yacht buyers more willing to investigate unfamiliar concepts rather than defaulting to what they have owned before.
“People are doing more research before they ever walk through the door,” Sastre said. “They are seeing different boats while traveling, watching how other owners cruise, and learning about designs that they might not have considered ten years ago. That creates a much more informed conversation.”
Innovation Has to Serve the Owner
New technology is adding another dimension to that conversation.
Navigation, electrical systems, onboard power management, communications, propulsion, and comfort systems continue to evolve, giving builders more ways to rethink how yachts are designed and operated.
But PYS says innovation alone should not determine whether a yacht is right for a buyer.
“The question we always come back to is what the technology or design actually does for the owner,” Sastre said. “Something being new doesn’t automatically make it better for every person. Innovation matters when it makes the yacht better suited to what that owner wants to do on the water.”
That philosophy has informed PYS’s work with European yacht builders over more than a decade. The company has represented brands including Salona Yachts, Bavaria Yachts, Italia Yachts, Grand Soleil, Nautitech Catamarans, NEEL Trimarans, LEEN Trimarans, Northman Yachts, and Aventura Yachts.
Introducing those yachts to the American market has required more than displaying new models. It has also meant helping buyers understand unfamiliar concepts, working with shipyards to address the expectations of U.S. owners, and supporting customers through selection, customization, commissioning, and ownership.
For Sastre, the biggest change is that many ideas that once required lengthy introductions are now part of the mainstream yacht-buying conversation.
American buyers have greater access to international builders, more information about different yacht configurations, and more opportunities to see how other owners are using their boats. As a result, the conversation is increasingly moving beyond where a yacht was built and toward a more practical question: how well does it fit the life its owner wants to have on the water?
